How to finish a crossword puzzle

"I thought I was horrible at crosswords, then after doing them for two weeks I finally completed the one in the paper!"
How I did it: I looked at the answers the next day for the ones I missed, this helped me figure out how the clues work. Oftentimes they're not straightforward. Looking at the answers the next day thus helped me figure out the "crossword language". Sure it was the Monday crossword, but now I want to finish the ones later in the week. There's always a new challenge...
