How to raise cattle
How I did it: For years I dreamed of the day when I would own a small ranch where I could raise cows, chickens and other animals. Since I was in High School, I have collected books and pamphlets on raising cows and chickens.
Last year, I was able to move to that small ranch, a 40 acre place near Elko Nevada. I now have a Scottish Highland bull named Seamus, a small flock of chickens, several goats and a few dogs and cats.
We made friends with a local small rancher and got our bull and first chickens through him. Another friend provided some more chickens.
Lessons & tips: Get to know other ranchers/farmers in your area. They can be a great help and usually share your passion to care for animals.
Resources: I'd say that the biggest help with the livestock have been the
"Storey's" books on each. Just about anything you would need to know is
in those books.
The other big help has been my local feed store. The folks there are
always so helpful and very knowledgeable about a wide variety of animal
needs.
