How to read 12 books in 2009
"Once I got the ball rolling, I remembered just how much I love reading, and from there on out it was a piece of cake--very delicious cake."
How I did it: I tried to read for fun during the school year, but it just was too difficult with all the other stuff I had going on (thesis). So after graduation, I cashed in my Barnes and Noble gift card and bought quite a few books! I asked a lot of people for suggestions, found a series I really enjoy, and tried to read in the afternoons at first, while I was sunbathing. Before too long I was also reading before bed, then in the morning, then whenever! It's a great way to pass the time while traveling, too.
Lessons & tips:
- Keep a list of possible books--if you can, buy some and have them handy so you never have an excuse not to, once you have the time!
- Try to establish a time frame (one book per month/per week/whatever.. I started late and knew I wanted to do it by the end of summer so I tried to read a book a week, ish.)
- Ask friends and family for suggestions. It's fun also to pass on good reads to others, I always feel good when someone enjoys a book I loan/give them!
Resources: Barnes and Noble (online is cheaper), the library, reading glasses.
