"Our lives have been forever enhanced!"
How I did it: Ok so this post is a long time coming. We moved into an apartment, moved into another apartment, got married and moved into a house (wow, check those off my list too!)
To decide if the Boxer breed was for us, we got involved in a local Boxer rescue group. Now, we are a foster family, pulling dogs from area shelters, getting them well again, and then helping them find home of their own. We are on our fourth foster, and we have a wonderful Boxer girl of our own too. Our newest challenge is a little white boy who is completely deaf. He's such a joy to watch him play and give kisses and never tire out and be so curious.
Lessons & tips: The best advice I can give is to work with a foster group or area
shelter when looking to get a new puppy. There are so many deserving
dogs who get put to sleep every day for no reason other than the
shelter ran out of room. Which happens because people purchase their
dogs from breeders. Breeders unnecessarily (and selfishly) continue to
breed puppies when there is already an animal overpopulation in our
country. Pet stores buy from breeders and treat their animals terribly.
DO NOT SUPPORT PET STORES OR BREEDERS. Sadly, 10,000 dogs and cats die
every day for no good reason. Imagine if we all stood together to
defeat breeders and pet shops. Spay or neuter your pet - it makes a
difference!!!
Resources: Legacy Boxer Rescue in DFW, Texas, was an invaluable resource, and we will forever be indebted to them for the love and lessons they've bestowed on us in allowing us to adopt our Boxer girl, Sabrina.
