How to live abroad for a year
"A year in the Italian Alps learning the fine points of Italian cooking and the Italian language. "
How I did it: I made some great connections with the director of religious life at my university who put me in contact with an ecumenical retreat center in the Alps, after a few conversations and some momentary insanity I agreed to try the center for 2 months and then decided to move there in Oct.
Lessons & tips: try to define the time abroad as part of your "real life" as well, not just some in between period
Home sickness will be both worse and not as bad as you expected
Skype is the most amazing program on the face of the planet
Find time to work through your emotions of living abroad whether it be journaling, meditating, a daily run, whatever works for you.
