How I did it: I kept my notebook nearby at all times and whenever inspiration hit, whatever it was to do with, I'd jot it down. I would also at least once a week spend some time working to fill an entire page with generated ideas, usually starting with a trigger word or idea.
Lessons & tips: Always have a notebook and pen handy.
Sit down and spend some time just generating ideas. They don't have to be good, just write what comes. Set yourself a goal, like a full page or 10 minutes solid writing.
