How to be more fashionable
"I moved to Manhattan and at first had no clue."
How I did it: I have never liked to spend huge amounts on my wardrobe and am a pretty laid back/casual person. However, living in Manhattan and being a person who likes to go out to events, dancing, parties, etc., I soon realized the need to decorate myself a bit more!
I began to watch everyone. Instead of reading magazines (which I find boring) I just noticed what other women were wearing. I took note of what I liked and didn't. Because everyone is so fashionable in the city, it's like reading a magazine anyway. I forced myself to notice those details I usually wouldn't. "What type of sandals are those? Are they gladiators? Are they flip flops? Are they leather?" Etc.
I then noticed trends. However, I purchased mostly classic items as that is more my style and they last longer. You don't need a huge budget. Just an understanding of what items are "in." And what looks good on you. You'll have to spend some serious time looking through stores and tap into your creativity and what you're trying to express also.
Also consider what is practical. Three inch stilletos when you're walking 15 blocks? Don't think so! But you can always bring a slightly larger black handbag at night and wear some tiny ballet flats you can swap when you arrive. Or, plan on taking a cab. Wobbling in uncomfortable shoes is a bad idea I've seen happen far too often!
You can also get named brand items at sample sales, discount stores like Century 21, etc. Or look at boutiques for more original finds. Get create and have fun expressing how you feel with what you're wearing! :)
Lessons & tips: Pay a lot of attention to what others are wearing.
Don't worry about the cost, so much as the basic cut of an outfit, the color and style. Copy that and you can buy good classic items that are less pricey.
