How to write a will
How I did it: My main sticking point was not being able to afford a solicitor, and worrying about not getting it right if I did it myself. The turning point came when a friend told me she'd done hers and it was at a price I could afford. I contacted her solicitor and my partner and I arranged to see him. It didn't take us long to decide what we actually wanted to happen, and we went along for a chat about what needed to be done, he drafted the wills, and we went back and signed them! Job done.
The weird bit was I thought I'd be relieved because it had been on my mind so much for so long, but I felt exhausted afterwards. I was still glad I'd done it, and I couldn't understand why I felt that way - I reckon it must've been taking a lot of mental energy and when it was done I felt I could let go. Anyway, I'm really glad it's done - it's given me peace of mind.
Lessons & tips: Think about different scenarios that might happen, e.g. you die before partner, partner before you, both together, etc. What if one of you has children and the other doesn't?
Resources: Personal recommendation from a friend, and an affordable solicitor - they do exist!
