How to go to the San Diego zoo
How I did it: Picked a weekend a few months out, hopped on priceline and landed a cheap hotel. Got cheap car (beware: parking is $$$ in the city), and read up on city via TripAdvisor.
Lessons & tips: If you visit in the summer (as we did), I recommend getting an early
start. It opens at 9am, parking is free, and bring a bottle of water
you can refill at the multiple fountains around the park. If you're
physically able to walk, wear comfy shoes to navigate the zoo's many
hills and steps. If you can't walk, the zoo has a great shuttle that
takes visitors from site to site (I think unlimited rides are $10).
Side note: SD has tons of cultural events at any time in the city and park where zoo is located. Check out city websites to find out if any are on the day you're planning to visit. A parade was scheduled for ours, so we planned to arrive after traffic was gone.
