How I did it: I went to a hairdresser that i trusted and chose a natural brown. Make sure each time you get it redyed you get it done professionally as the finish is so much nicer. Plus a cut u are familiar with is a good start so that the change isnt too drastic for you the first time.

Ask people for their honest opinion if it suites you or not.
I personally didnt go too dark, but i have fairly olive skin so i did not look pale with dark hair, however if you have pale skin you make look paler with dark hair.
Be prepared to change your wardrobe as some colours that suite blonde dont suite brunette.
