How I did it: Although I quit my higher paying job in loss prevention, I had a decent amount of money saved up for this event! I called up my credit card company, explained my circumstances, and asked if they could help me.
They did! By offering me a hardship discount called a "match pay".
Yes, I did have to cough up half of my amount charged, but they matched the other half. Now the bill is completely paid off - and so worth it.
It would have taken me two years making payments of TRIPLE the minimum amount due to pay that bill off!!

Lessons & tips: First off, the best thing you can do is call your credit card company. I was working with Citi Bank and they were really courteous and helpful.
Explain what's going on, and maybe even tell them the calculations you've made for how long this bill will take you to pay off otherwise.
