How to design and make a pattern for a jacket/shrug to go with the dresses I have been making
How I did it: I started with an idea of how I wanted the wrap shrug to look and fit. I spent two days making a pattern on brown craft paper by pulling out pieces of clothing from my closet made from the same kind of fabric (knit) that fit me really well in some section or other, and tracing portions of them with a pencil onto the paper. I started with the sections I was the most sure of, and worked my way towards the sections that were going to have to be more freeform, since they were different than anything I have. I also spent some time working out what pieces were going to be needed to assemble the garment, and what order they should be sewn together in.
The third and fourth days I used some spare knit fabric to sew my prototype. I was hoping, but not expecting, it to work on the first try since I put some curves into the fabric that were going to be a little unpredictable in 3D. Fortunately, I managed to model it correctly in my head, and it did work, and well enough that the first draft ended up being a functional addition to my wardrobe! The silver knit, although too pale in color to make the dress I had intended when I ordered the fabric, turned out to work perfectly with the plum purple dress I made recently! Also, I keep finding new ways to wear the thing! It is really versatile!
Lessons & tips: Don't let the fabric stretch while tracing it.
Remember to add seam and hem allowances to the pattern.
Sergers are great for sewing knits and stretchy fabrics.
