How to go to Africa
"Absolutely life-changing."
How I did it:
For as long as I can remember I've wanted to go to Africa, so I started saving up my money and looking for different opportunitites to be able to go. THrough dfiferent connections i was able to find a "host" home in a convent in a tiny village in the middle of nowhere, central Uganda. So I spent 6 weeks there living with the nuns, and working as a teacher and as a nurse. Back here in the states i'm a CNA, so i put those skills to use and also learned how to do everything else I needed to do. I'm a pro at giving shots now! Also, as a teacher there I completely fell in love with my kids. I taught 7th grade english, science, and social studies. We played games and sang songs during breaks, and I loved watching each of them grow as students and as people even in the short time i was there. it was definitely tough to live without electricity or running water for 6 weeks, but completely worth it!!
Lessons & tips:
- JUST GO!! Seriously, if you've ever thought about it, there's no time like the present! There are plenty of organizations out there looking for volunteers.
