How to build an excellent piece of furniture out of wood by thriftsiren

"I made an altar for Dia de los Muertos and it was awesome!"

How I did it: I took a shop class at my university. I learned how to use a lot of different tools, and I even learned the basics of welding! As my final project, I was allowed to make anything I wanted. I love my dia de los muertos altar and while it might not be the functional piece of furniture I had initially envisioned creating, I am still extremely proud of myself for completing this goal. 

Lessons & tips: Take a class! Learn safety procedures! Protect your eyes and ears!

Nothing like making your own beautiful things

When I graduated from college but didn’t have a real job yet I spent a few weeks making a coffee table from a slab of myrtle wood my dad bought on a family vacation years earlier. Made with hand tools and joinery…no nails, screws or bicuits.

It is still in my living room. It needs to be refinished (coffee rings damn it!) but it’s precious and reminds me of my life at that time and also is a remembrance of my father.

I hope you make many more beautiful things.
