How to memorize all the words to REM's "It's the End of the World as We Know It"
How I did it: I listened to the song whilst reading the lyrics, then I memorized a couple of lines at a time and would try to say each line with the music. Then I tried the lines I knew alone, without the music. I practiced walking to and from my room to the kitchen or just when I had some free time until I could say the first (and most difficult) verse without even really having to think about it, it became second nature to me. It only took me a day to memorize the the first stanza and then I took a LONG break before I learned the next two stanzas (because I had school and such)... I would say taking a break is a good thing, but that one probably could learn the whole song pretty quickly... That's why I said it takes 2 days, because I only actually spent 2 days on learning the song and rest was waiting time. :)
Lessons & tips:
- Break up the song into smaller sentences, it's MUCH less daunting to learn a few sentences at a time than an entire song... especially one that doesn't exact flow in a tradtional sense of the word.
- Repetition is key, there's an acting technique in which you learn the words so well that they become natural coming from your lips and you won't have to fumble finding the words, but instead you can concentrate on just singing the song!
- Have fun! I know it's frustrating when you slip up with the words, but don't beat yourself up over it! It is not the same as operating on a brain, you can do it multiple times... and quite frankly messing up is part of the fun!
Resources: jamglue.com (or you can use youtube or another song site, I use jamglue, because my computer is slow and it loads songs quickly... there aren't distracting images either...)
A lyrics website (just google, givoogle, bing or yahoo... whichever your prefered search engine is...) and many lyrics pages will show up!
