How I did it: I wrote! story after story after story after story. :) and I submitted them to anything I could, regardless of how farfetched the thought of being published was. Some of the stories were terrible, but others were truly good works of creativity. And in the end, I reached my goal of being published, but I learned that the achievement was in the process.
