How to do the Couch to 5k running plan
"When did I become a runner?"
How I did it: I did it using my feet, my legs, a lot of sweat, strength that I didn't know that I had, and a lot of moaning on the couch about how much I hurt.
And I'm still going to do it.
Lessons & tips:
- Download as many podcasts as you can. My first 3-4 weeks I used
Suz's because I loved how cheerful and encouraging she was, but once I
got into my own groove I used the c25k iphone app and my own
playlists. Variety is great, and I've found that anything with a
steady beat is helpful. - Before you do anything at all, if you're serious about completing
this make your first stop to a running store (not one of the crappy
ones in the mall, either!) and get yourself some good sneakers. They
will be you're best friend. - Run at your own pace. Don't run as fast as you can and get
winded really early one simply because you're thinking that you need to
be super fast. Run at whatever pace is comfortable to you, and if
that's a 17 min/mile, that's fine. You need to work on stamina before
speed, otherwise you'll completely burn yourself and hate it. - Find yourself a good running forum/community, or make some runner
friends. They'll be you're own personal cheering section when your
family and friends get tired of hearing about it. - Get yourself some comfy clothes. You'll learn pretty quickly
what's good for you and what's not, usually right around week 4 when
you start to get sweaty.
