Advice.
I am making this huge move to Boston from Las Vegas. How did you find a family to work for? Did you find them in advance? DId you use an agency? How is it going!?

Hi Ashley,
I started looking on greataupair, but I don’t really recommend using that site. Full use is not free, and there just aren’t that many families on there.
I actually found my family on Craigslist, and it has really proven useful. Beware of scams, such as job offers that really seem too good to be true and anyone from overseas that is “relocating to the boston area.”
Since I moved here, I finished a contract with a family that was for 6 mos. They wanted me to continue, but at that point, I was really ready to move on from the “live-in” situation.
That leads me to where I am now: Currently, I have two nanny jobs, (which is very common) I work 2 days with one family and 3 with the other.
I would try Sittercity.com and craigslist.org in the childcare section of community. Try not to get discouraged, it is highly competitive right now, much more so than when I started in January. I’m not sure if you are moving first and then finding a job, or trying to find one prior. The latter is definitely harder, but really try to sell yourself with good references and by webcamming in lieu of an in person interview.
As far as an agency goes, unless you have about 30 references (No joke) and several local references, it’s not worth trying. My friend, who is almost done with her teaching credentials and masters degree and also has over 15 years of experience, got on with an agency in June, however, she has not had one job from them! So, she’s been sticking with Craigs and SC.
Feel free to hit me up if you have any more questions, or if you’re looking to hang out with someone when you move. It’s probably one of the hardest things, as I’ve noticed people are a little bit harder to get through to at first.

Thank You!
Melissa!
I have been looking for someone to talk to who has done what I am about to do. Thank you so much for the reply.
Yes, I have greataupair.com I have not had any luck on their. About a year ago I even paid for my membership and got nothing. That site is no good. I was reading about a handful of agencies in Boston, there is a lot more than here in Vegas. I am not sure if I am going to try.
Craigslist has been my best friend with this entire move. From everything from housing to job hunting.
It seems because of my training and experience in the top hotels Vegas has to offer I will not have a problem getting a job in a restaurant, I have some interviews lined up. Fingers crossed.
Too say the least I am so nervous and excited but more nervous. I am doing this alone. I will only know one person in the city.
You said you did a live-in position. How did that work out? I have always been kind of hesitant to do that. Where are you living now? Do you have a car?

You’ll have no problem getting a job in the restaurant industry, if you have experience.
Where will you be moving? Will you be going to school out here? I live near Davis SQ. in Somerville, Which is on the Redline (Subway). It’s just a few stops to Boston.
I don’t exactly recommend doing a live-in position. It worked, and it was really convenient, but on the same hand, I really needed more of my own space.
As of right now, I do not have a car. I got along fine without one, actually. I even have a bike that I ride to work. But, when the weather changes, I think I’ll want a car, since I live a bit further from the convenient public transportation.
Craigslist has been the best thing for me also. I may have to weed through it, but there is some good stuff on there.
That’s cool that you will at least know one person. That will make it a lot easier. Count on getting homesick here and there, especially when it’s super snowy or something, lol. But, you’ll probably love it out here enough for it to be worth it.
When do you move?
I was a tad nervous about leaving my car behind but it seems most people find other ways to get around. Plus I do not want to pay for parking. Most places it seems crazy expensive to park.
I move in the next two weeks! As I have interviews set up first week of Sept. Alot is happening at once, but I have faith everything will be worth it.
: )
I am so happy I was able to speak with you I will be sure to contact you with anymore random questions, fears, and concerns I can come up with! :P
Done!
Well, I moved to Boston about 20 days ago? Started working. And live in the fabulous North End. I love Boston to say the least. Thanks again! I hope is well for you!
