I think it was more like
20% training, 60% lunacy and 20% stubbornness for me – the lunacy
part was 8000’ feet elevation gain
in icy conditions.

How I did it: So far, I’ve completed a total of 87 races, 42 of them are ultramarathons. Specifically, I’ve completed four 24-hour runs (87, 75, 71 and 48 miles), twenty 50-milers, and a handful of various other distances.
Any marathon training program will prepare you for most ultras. The difference is that you run ultras differently than you do marathons. Basically, walk all of the uphills and run all of the flats and downhills. With this strategy, you'll have a great chance at survival!
Lessons & tips: Accept that you will hurt.
Accept the fact that you will experience discomfort.
Accept the fact that you will curse yourself at some point during the event.
Never focus on the finish line. Instead, focus only on each individual step and eventually the steps will equal the finish line.
