How to see Starry Night

Mr Van G

I first saw Starry Night as a child at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. I fell in love with Van Gogh’s works at that time. Years later, I saw it again at the Impressionist Building in Paris, then more years later at a Van Gogh exhibition in Tokyo. Vincent’s art makes me cry. My favorites are his self portraits and Bedroom at Arles. Here is my poor attempt at a copy. I ain’t no Van Gogh.

Seriously, that’s a great representation! Much better than I could do.

I agree, Van Gogh’s art is so moving. Especially to see it in real life…it’s surreal. Have you read any of his letters? I’ve read some of his letters to his brother Theo (book Dear Theo) and it’s no wonder his work is so moving. He couldn’t escape his passion and conviction.

How awesome that you were able to see Starry Night more than once. :)

Thank you for sharing your art. Keep it up! :)

Letters to Theo

I have read some of their letters (to and from Theo). One of my books, a rather large tome called The Complete Works of Vincent van Gogh, has quite a few letters along with his life story, step by step. Have you read Stones’s LUST FOR LIFE? It’s a very moving book about Van Gogh’s life. The film, starring Kirk Douglas, was fantastic. Anthony Quinn (who I have worked with) plays Gauguin. Starry Night is another film about Van Gogh, but a bit weird in that Vincent is transported by his love for flowers (and their love returned) to our present day and must some how, in 100 days, right some wrongs. Needless to say, he is quite surprised at the value of his paintings now, he having only sold one in his life for a few francs. The actors are unknowns, and the film never got any recognition, but it’s interesting. Don McLean sings his song, Vincent, in the beginning and end.

In my latest novel, I have included a chapter on Van Gogh and Gauguin in Arles.

I’m glad you think my art isn’t all that bad. In that case, I’ve included 2 more, here and in comments. Also, the picture over my name is an attempt at one of Vincent’s self portraits.

One more by Vincent

A couple of major problems with this one (and many minor ones)

I have not read Lust for Life yet…it’s on my ever-growing list! Glad to know it’s good…;)
