How to learn to play the kalimba
"Such a lovely instrument that is not hard to play - you can pick out tunes quite easily - but it will be fun and challenging to bring out its potential."
How I did it: I don't claim to be an expert after two months, but I feel that I know enough to say I've learned how to play it (much like I know how to play the guitar, the piano, and the cello - not well, but enough).
I got an 8-note kalimba and messed around with it, and I watched some of Mark Holdaway's stuff on YouTube. It was pretty simple to pick up "Feelin' Groovy" as he plays it. Then I went to kalimbamagic.com and looked at some of the resources there. The "Best-Ever" books are good for giving the basics.
Lessons & tips:
- Just play!
- If you feel you need more structure, I think the books on www.kalimbamagic.com are very helpful. They don't assume that you know how to read music and he takes you through chords and thumb exercises.
- Play some more!
- You can use guitar tabs, although unless you have a chromatic kalimba, the chords you can play are a little limited.
- If you tune your kalimba left-handed (the lowest note played with the left thumb) and you use the KTabS tablature system, you have to read it upside down.

Mark Holdaway is very helpful and will answer questions about all things kalimba.
