"it kicked my ass"
How I did it: I visited my family in Arizona for the holidays in 2008 and for New Year's, my cousins and I just decided out of whim to go and try it!
I didn't really know what to expect, but i guess i'm one of those people that just gets talked into doing things> I mean, even though I've been wanting to do them, it's not until i get others to go with me that I go and do it too. So we started buying our gear the day before and I knew at that point, okay, we have to go and do this even though i had NO idea how to snowboard at all.
We went up to Flagstaff, AZ and when we got to the Ski Lodge, we bought our Lift tickets and decided to also buy the lesson for beginners because it's better to get at least some kind of formal training. I'm so glad we did that because prior to those lessons, I tried to get down the mountain and ended up losing my board! I almost got flagged and kicked out of the lodge because i let my board loose, even though it was just an accident! But it's a serious accident because a loose board is like a freaking loose canon! it can really kill!
The lesson really kicked my @$$! our instructor was helpful, but i seriously had the worst time just learning how to get up because the board is sooo slippery against the snow AND i had the worst ab muscles in the world! i was SO exhausted and wiped out i was so seriously ready to give up! But i kept at it and was at least successful in getting up, even if just a few times!!! :)
The best part was when i learned to finally take a bit of control of my board and successfully snowboard down the mountain for a good 500ft! For those precious 10 or so seconds of being up on my snowboard and boarding down without eating it felt so great and was definitely worth all the hard work and getting my body beat up for!
I definitely plan on going for more seasons, but I'll make sure to get better snow shoes that's fitted to me, even if it may be pricey!
Lessons & tips: - always tie your board's leash to your pants where they're supposed to be!
- drink PLENTY of fluids
- make sure your snow shoes fit snuggly, never too tight!
- believe the test for "goofy" vs. "regular" -- trust me, it works!!!
