How to take a successful staycation
How I did it: Before our staycation, we kept a running list of ideas of what we might like to do. Then we discussed what our priorities were, and made sure we did those things. Then, we planned activities each day according to the weather forecast and our energy level. We collected brochures anywhere they were available, trolled the internet, and checked guidebooks out of the library to get ideas of where our day trips should take us. This led us to vary our day trips nicely (going to a big city, nature reserves, a water park) and also left us with a big list of future destinations. We feel like we've hardly scraped the surface of things to do in this area!
Lessons & tips: Live in an area with lots to do! :) Here in southeastern Massachusetts, almost anything that says "vacation activity!" to you is available. Don't let yourself get caught up in normal at-home activities--remember that it's a vacation! And be flexible, so as the weather changes you can change your plans accordingly.
Resources: The internet. The library (for guidebooks, and potentially for library passes for admission into attractions). The car. A cooler, bug spray, and sunscreen. :)
