How to write and act in my own comedy stage show
How I did it: I had a lot of scenes I had written during the Second City Writing Program. Then I got together with a friend and wrote some more scenes during a few months' worth of writing sessions. Then I had a mutual acquaintance hook me up with my director. Then I rented a theater space. Then we had auditions and assembled a cast. Then we had rehearsals. Then we put on our show.
This is the absolute most bare bones, nutshell version of creating my show. The entire experience was a complete learning experience. I had so many setbacks and roadblocks and I made so many mistakes. But it was so completely worth it in the end.
Lessons & tips: Getting my first-ever show off the ground was the hardest part of the process. I had so many unsupportive people tell me not to do things one way and/or tell me to scale down my ambitions and it was all bull. I should have never listened to any of that for a second. Don't listen to any of that. Just do it.
Marketing is so incredibly important. It's equally as important as making sure the actual product is good. I wish I had someone help me out with this part of production.
With all that said, just have fun with it! It's comedy, for God's sake.
