How to do a back walkover
How I did it: I'm 32, so it took me a long time of working up to it. Improving my backbend was important, and happened gradually over probably the last 4 years. I could say the same for my ability to drop back into a backbend from standing.
The next step is learning to kick over the hands from a backbend.
The final step is putting the two pieces together: drop over and kick back as smoothly as possible. Obviously I've still only done a few of these successfully, so I'm not smooth yet.
Lessons & tips: Get comfortable kicking over from a backbend first. In order to kick over, the following things might help:
- Rock yourself over your shoulders 3 times and kick on the third one
- Kick up and over, not just up
- Pick up your second leg too!
- Press as hard as you can into your fingertips
- Consider tucking your head as you do all this; it moves a heavy body part a few inches in the right direction.
