How to learn to knit
How I did it: I bought a book and taught myself, but I know now that there are too many resources online that will help you more than the book I had. Also, there are tons of classes and almost any knitter is happy to share as long as you ask nicely. CHeck out knittinghelp.com for videos that will show you everything you need to know from casting to to binding off, and all the things you can use in between.
I pretty well got the gist in one night, but I have kept learning new techniques and things since then.
Lessons & tips: Give yourself time to learn. You may get casting on and the knit stitch in a night, but you might forget how to cast on before your next project too. Just give yourself time and find a project you love, even if other people tell you it's too hard for a beginner.
