How to journal regularly
How I did it: Thanks to a comment here on 43T, I decided to try writing in my journal daily, whether I felt like I had anything to say or not. (I'm working to rebuild my daily routine anyway, so adding a few minutes in the morning to write in my journal only seemed logical.) It might not work for everyone, but, once I got into the habit, it was easy to stick with it.
I started this particular journal back in late 2007, and I've managed to fill more than half of it since this past July. I'll be starting a brand new book tomorrow.
Lessons & tips:
- find a book you enjoy writing in, and a pen or pencil that flows easily across the page. (I'm irrationally attached to Moleskine notebooks, personally. I'm still searching for that perfect pen.)
- set aside some time every day (or every few days, or every week, whatever you think will work for you) to write, and stick with it until it becomes a habit. Even if you have nothing to say, except "I have nothing to say today."
- don't get too hung up on what you feel like you should be writing. It's your journal, you get to decide what goes in it.
