How I did it: If you're in the DC area, check out Miriam's Kitchen near Foggy Bottom. They have a number of local universities and companies that provide volunteers (including my own - which is how I got involved) - but they'd probably welcome other volunteers. And if nothing else, they always need donations of food and clothing.
