How to get a PhD
How I did it: By taking time off to finish the prospectus and writing three years later. Not a great financial move, but definitely necessary to concentrate on getting it done.
Lessons & tips:
- Comunicate frequently with your director and ask for clear goals that you can complete in a timely manner.
- Share chapters with your committee & director simultaneously if possible so that changes can be negotiated well before your defense.
- Join ABD discussion/coaching groups to share strategies, develop a writing community and learn more about the process.
- Get a writing partner, especially if you have limited contact with your director & committee. The writing partner can be from another discipline or school. This is a person who will encourage and share strategies. You can also read drafts for one another.
