How to move into my own place
How I did it: First I had to find somewhere to call home. I settled on a few areas that had the amenities I wanted - easy transport to the city, a vibrant local cafe scene, peaceful parks - and set about exploring weekly listings. I eventually found my new apartment through a tip from a friend - it wasn't perfect, but it was close enough and time was almost up.
Second came the move itself. I had some help getting organised, but mostly did this by myself. I set aside a couple of weekends to pack, organised a day off work for the move itself, and made peace with the idea of paying removalists. The move went more or less smoothly;
Finally, came the unpacking and settling in. Fact: no matter how long you think this will take, it will take approximately three times longer. And that's ok. I took a long while to settle in - and I put off some tasks, like unpacking the last of my boxes, and buying extra furniture, for longer than I should have.
Lessons & tips: Moving in can be hard - prioritise doing and buying whatever you need to feel at home, and enjoy the chance to do something just for yourself. It's a great opportunity to organise things just the way you want them - don't compromise on what will make you comfortable just because you're the only one who lives there!
If you're used to living with other people, moving by yourself can be lonely at first. Host lots of housewarming events and let your friends and family know they are welcome to visit you at home; get involved in activities in your new neighbourhood and get to know the local parks and cafes. You will soon get used to the time and space to yourself, and then you'll wonder how you ever managed without it.
