How to take a homeless person out to lunch
How I did it: When I saw these two kids with their big backpacks sitting at union square, i had a feeling that they were people i wanted to talk to. so i sat by them and we started talking. they were punk traveler kids and had been hopping freight trains across america (which, incidentally, is something i've always, always wanted to do). so we talked for a long time, and i found out one of them had never really seen ny before.
so i took them to times square, we watched the tourists and talked a lot, they had interesting stories (of course) and were some of the sweetest kids i've ever met.
i let them stay at my apartment, sleep on my bed actually since i really didn't want them to have to sleep on the street, and they left in the morning, but i had a wonderful time and they were really quite lovely people with the best stories.
even if it isn't taking a bum out to lunch, i think the theory is close enough that it counts. and, this is better. :D
Lessons & tips: be very open minded and look for opportunities.
