How to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Award
"theres nothing like those moments when you've spent the last hour and a half walking up the biggest hill you'd thought you'd ever seen to reach the top and find theres another almost twice the size on the other side"
How I did it:
About Gold DofE expedition:
So its hard. No denying it. You'll miss your bed, all sorts of foods and strange things like being able to brush your teeth properly...
But it's definitely worth it. When you've finished you'll feel, or at least I did, an immense satisfaction in all you've done in the last five days.
Plus I hear, although no promises, that you get to meet the Duke of Edinburgh when you complete Gold
If you're contemplating doing it or not definitely have a go! Any questions feel free to ask!
Lessons & tips:
About Gold DofE expedition:
Firstly make sure you have the right kit. Can't be walking in boots that are too tight or socks that keep slipping down. Make sure you have a waterproof jacket and that the trousers you wear (if you're not wearing waterproof over trousers) don't get too heavy when wet because that makes everything twice as hard.
No.1 tip: MAKE SURE YOU'RE SLEEPING BAG DOES NOT GET WET. It didn't happen to me but after walking in what seemed to be torrential rain I could only imagine what it would have to be like to sleep in a wet sleeping bag. Wrap it up in at least one black bin liner even if your rucksack is waterproof.
Be sympathetic to others when they feel hopeless and always be encouraging.
Always eat a hot dinner but its probably not worth the effort of heating the tranja and waiting for it to cool in the morning for breakfast so go for something like pancakes that dont need heating. Take lots of snacks (chocolate bars, small bags of nuts and raisins etc) for breaks.
