How I did it: I got more money back from my tax return than expected.  I checked on Expedia.com and found a great deal only four weeks before my departure.  You only live once. 

Lessons & tips: Sometimes you can find great deals at the last minute.  Don't be discouraged by the idea that you have to book a 6 months or more in advance.
