"Actually, I had LASEK...twice, because the first time didn't work."
How I did it: Went in for a free consultation. They give you an eye exam and map your corneas. I was told I couldn't have LASIK because of the shape of my corneas, so they offered me LASEK instead. A very similar procedure, but it's a surface treatment, and there was quite a bit of discomfort in the days after the surgery, which you don't get with LASIK.
The weeks following the surgery my vision was fluctuating. Although my vision had improved somewhat, I never had very clear vision. The doctor prescribed glasses for driving and told me I would likely need surgery again to improve my vision to perfect or near-perfect. I had to keep going in for checkups every few months to determine if my vision stabilized.
After about 6 months, they said I was ready to undergo surgery again. This time I knew what I was in for and took a week off work. The recovery was the same as before, and a few weeks later my vision is near-perfect.
Lessons & tips: If your doctor offers an enhancement plan, buy it. I had to have surgery twice, and I would have been kicking myself if I had to pay for the surgery a second time.
If your getting LASEK, do take some time off of work after surgery to deal with the discomfort and avoid straining your eyes.
