How I did it: Planned using the internet. Booked hotels in advance. Booked Vatican entrance on internet to avoid very long queues. Bought 7-day metro/bus/tram pass in Rome. (very good value)
Lessons & tips: Hang on to your valuables when on a crowded metro.
