How I did it: Don't avoid things that you used to do with them. You have to do the same things but with someone like your best friend or someone else you're close with. That way after a while you'll have more memories of the activity with your friend.
Also, if you believe in fate, if you're no longer with someone...it wasn't meant to be. If it is meant to be something will happen in the future that changes the situation. All you can do is live your own life and make yourself a better person while you wait for the next thing to happen (whether its with them or someone else).
A MUST is complete detachment. Keeping in touch with an ex is alright after a certain period of complete disconnect. You have to take as much time as you need to be COMPLETELY over them. That point is only reached when you are no longer scheming to get back together with them. Even if you THINK you are ready...check with a close friend who can give you an accurate assessment.
