How I did it: My friend decided out of the blue that she wanted to go see Hoover Dam, and I thought it sounded just random enough to be fun.  However, a few days before we left, we realized we had taken 5 days off of work to go see a dam.  You can't look at a dam for 5 days, even a really, really big one.

Good maps to the rescue!  We just looked up Hoover Dam on the map, and looked around to see what was within driving distance.  We made a little itinerary based on our findings:

Day One: Drive to Nevada/ Roadside Attractions
Day Two: Camping in Valley of Fire State Park
Day Three: Area 51 and Las Vegas
Day Four: Hoover Dam, Boulder City, and a little bit more Vegas
Day Five: Driving back to California/ more Roadside Attractions

Lessons & tips: Before you show up to a campground in the middle of the Nevada desert at 1:30am, make sure you haven't accidentally left your tent in California.
