How to study something just because its interesting
"Otherwise known as never stop learning."
How I did it: My last couple years of high school I didn't have many required courses left to take, so I had at least 3 "study periods" each day, some semesters as many as 5. I learned much more useful knowledge during my free time than any of my classes every taught me.
At college I already knew many of my courses because I had taught myself in HS, so instead of studying, I was again free to study something just because it was interesting to me. During this time I learned the skill that I use to make my living today. I also took an elective class completely outside my major that has saved me thousands of dollars and lots of time (home electrical wiring). I have made hundreds of thousands of dollars using skills I taught to myself in between "the important classes" required for graduation. Sad but true.
Now as an adult, I constantly challenge myself to learn new things from internet tutorials, books and friends. You can do almost anything and you don't need "diplomas" to prove it! Just read, learn, practice!
Lessons & tips: ALWAYS study something just because it is interesting to you. Those things will end up being what you're all about!
