And it looks
like this. You can’t see very well in this pic, but the overskirt is black lace over black satin. the bride said I looked like a present!
How I did it: Realizing that alteration, like change, has to come from within, I began a series of deep searching conversations with a strapless vintage black lace and satin dress about why it was time to release the broken boning and make a bold step to recognize it deserved new boning so that it could fully actualize itself as a maid of honor dress. With its full consent, I took it to a specialty tailor and paid the grand total of $25 for five new boning insets. We're very happy in our new relationship, I no longer look like I have a third boob when I wear the dress and I think we both learned something.

Lessons & tips: Go to that vintage shop on College Ave in Oakland, near Broadway, kind of across from Filippo's.
Go to Sun's Alteration in Walnut Creek.
Don't force alteration. Allow alteration.
Resources: Above shops.
$25
A rib cage, to keep the strapless dress up. Boobs are nice, too.

before I get to that… the wedding theme sounded fun in a (as you said) punk boho kind of way.
I’ll be in a wedding in November. The bride is thinking about going with black dresses for the bridesmaids, offset with small bouquets of white calla-lilies and deep red roses. She has asked me to be her friend-of-honor, which means donning a classic black tux.
It was a happy coincidence finding that picture of you in this black bridesmaid dress. It looks glamorous.
