"Customizing the space you live in is both rewarding and fun!"
How I did it: I had just come off a six month stint with a production of STOMP, and I was enchanted with the urban-style set pieces and costumes from the show. So, I decided to recreate my bedroom in the same theme.
I painted the walls a dark, cement-grey and bought a set of stainless steel furniture. I added a galvenized metal trash can (much like the ones we had beaten on for the show) for a laundry hamper and tracked down a standing lamp that looked like a streetlight. I proceeded to tack up posters, pictures, and song lyrics to the walls for an "urban collage" effect, and added silver mesh curtains over the windows. For a few finishing touches, I found some old street signs at a flea market and bolted them to the wall, along with two huge unusually shaped mirrors.
I absolutely love the way the room turned out. Everything is perfect, and I'm constantly finding new ways to adjust things to suit my changing personality.
Lessons & tips: Be patient. Midway through the renovations, when the place is a mess and there's no furniture, don't freak out and give up. It'll turn out.
Be creative. It's YOUR space, make it the way YOU want it to be. Express yourself. If you want a crazy theme, go for it.
