How to finish a song
How I did it: I had had a really good week professionally and socially, and that carried over into my mind and gave me the momentum to follow through when the mood was right.
Lessons & tips: Don't try to do it with your conscious mind alone, because that's only about half the picture. I often find that when writing a song I get hung up on what I want the song to be, and that's the slippery slope that leads to perpetual incompleteness. Don't let go completely, but just reassure yourself that the song will take its course, and that any idea you have, you have for a reason. Another thing to watch out for is worrying if it sounds like something else, and this is a dangerous trap that can derail a song completely. My suggestion is to keep it in mind (just so as not to write another "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star"), but don't be afraid of it or think of it in a negative way. Just be confident that your idea is unique because it came from you. Showing your influences in your music is a beautiful thing in moderation. To cap it off, don't worry about your song being too simple - it can't be. You can always build up later (it's much easier than trying to do it all at once), but it's much harder to build down from a complex song. Just get the basic form down to completion, and you'll be amazed at the confidence boost and feeling of accomplishment you get when it's done.
