"Terrifying, character building and brilliant fun!"
How I did it: I did it by handing me notice in at work and moving to Italy. Really.
I'm not saying this suits everyone, I have the advantage of speaking the language fluently, already having the paperwork (I lived here before) and having a readymade network of contacts through my friends and my boyfriend. This makes it easier.
The real advice though is take the plunge. I knew that the job I was working in was not what I wanted. I also knew I would eventually move to Italy to be with my boyfriend. So, frustrated by the recession and driven to distraction by my boring number crunching job, I moved here with the intention of teaching English lessons to btide me over while I looked for something else.
I applied everywhere: Marketing, PR, Sales... but got nowhere. Then, out of the blue, I got a phone call about a CV I had placed online...
I have always wanted to be in communications and to organise events. But event planning is really hard to get into. So imagine my surprise when they said they were a wedding planning company looking to offer services to English speaking couples looking to marry in Italy!
I now have my dream job as a wedding planner and marketing manager for a new brand, and live on the Amalfi coast in Italy. If thet's not a dream, I don't know what is.
Lessons & tips:
- If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again.
- Put advertisements up and post your CV wherever you can. You might be unexpectedly discovered!
- Don't think your dream is impossible. It can come true.
- Network, network, network. Although I got the interview without contacts, it always helps and will also help after the event.
- Aim for the stars! One recruitment company told me companies weren't contacting me as I was overqualified, so aiming too low can damage your chances.
- Hold out for your dream job! I paid the rent with freelance teaching while waiting for my dreams to come true!
Resources:
- Internet job sites.
- Personality tests - like Myers Briggs. It can give you great inspiration.
- Keep studying and working! The more qualifications and experience you have, the better!
