How I did it: I had been meaning to visit a friend for a while, and was saving slowly, when she announced she was getting married and invited me to the wedding. Of course I leapt at the opportunity to go! So I booked a cheap ticket (yay for Jetblue) and went out for 3 days. Didn't get to do as much touristy stuff as I had wanted, but it was nice to see what I did. I'd like to go back at some point.

Lessons & tips: I checked all the airline pages I could think of, in addition to hotwire. Once there, get the Charlie Card; transit is cheaper that way and you can keep the card later as a souvenir.
