How to be a singer
How I did it: Well...last year I started working for Spirit Entertainment Cruises (as a server). It's a lunch/dinner harbor cruise with entertainment.(previously 3 production singers/dancers per cruise) Well..at the end of last season they announced that they were laying off all of the entertainers and they would restructure the entertainment part of the cruise and from that point on hire singing servers. I asked if I could audition and "voila" here I am a "singing" server. It's only the beginning. I'm starting to build my confidence and am using this opportunity to open up other doors for me. Some of my newer co-workers have even been on broadway and national tours of those shows. I ask them everything I can think of. My acting class is not too far away, as being in New York has helped me to discover this whole thing they call "musical theater"....who knew?
Lessons & tips: Start off with something small...(karaoke, open mikes, etc.) and take it one step at a time. Don't try to pick songs that are too difficult for your voice at the beginning...as you improve start to pick pieces that are more challenging.
Resources: Think about getting a vocal coach/teacher. A good coach will encourage you to move out of your comfort zone and they will hopefully have outside connections, information and resources to help you move forward. As was true for mine...my first open mike in New York came through my vocal coach. I had been too scared to even do karaoke while I was in New York...but like they say the first step is the hardest...and after that you just soak up the fear and push through. I'm never going to let my fear hold me back again!
