How I did it: Some friends of mine had already started and needed a keyboard player.  I joined.  Been in, playing the keyboard, for 2 years now.  Played roughly once a month during the school year.  Lots of practice and patience involved.  Everybody grew as a musician. 

Lessons & tips: Practice.  Have fun.  Keep your sense of humor.  Don't expect awesomeness right away.
