How to learn to ride a bike
How I did it: My family and I were in Europe travelling through Germany. We had stopped to visit some distant family relatives and my sis (7) and me (9) were able to use their son's bike (as he was in school).
My sis and I hung out on their driveway and alternated with the bike. First I remember sitting on the bike and trying to balance and slowly removing my feet from the ground. Then slowly while still seated I would push off the ground for momentum to see if I can move and still be balanced. It took a long time to get my balance/body use to the idea/feeling.
Finally I was able to go a little distance on the driveway and finally lift my feet and start peddling. Now I had to learn how to stop. It was one of those bikes with the back peddle brake. It took a while, but got the hang of it, too.
Lessons & tips:
- start in a large, flat area
- be prepared to fall/lose balance (it's OK, that is how you learn)
- wear a helmet (we didn't have those) when riding
