How to become a principal
How I did it: It took more than three years of coursework in educational administration (doctoral level) and a ridiculously extensive portfolio to obtain my license.
Lessons & tips: Don't feel obligated to get an administration license in any particular state. My teaching license is in SC, my administrator's license is from MN, and I work as a principal in LA! It isn't quite the hassle that a teacher license will cause you, you can often apply for principal jobs when they know you don't have that particular state's license.
Resources: I'd advise anyone who does a distance education course or any educational administration coursework, to choose a school with a cohort design! This means that you move through the coursework with the same group of people. I now have 20 other people to tap into as personal resources for me. Many of them were principals or assistant superintendents who were getting their doctorates. Instant personal access to resources and ideas! You will definitely need it for your own encouragement.
