How to raise chickens for eggs
"Chickens make a great backyard addition"
How I did it: Well, its been a year since I got my day old peeps, I have two black Australorps and two Barred Plymouth Rocks who give us about 20-24 eggs a week.
I built my own chicken coop and run, it turned out ok but you may want to find a good set of plans online.
Lessons & tips: - Buy day old peeps in October so they are ready to start laying when spring comes around and daylight starts going up (Chickens need 14hours a day to produce an egg).
- Decide if you want white or brown egg producers
- Four chickens produce enough eggs for a family of 4 each week.
Resources: - "Storeys Guide to Raising Chickens" and "Keeping Chickens, Essential Guide" are the two best books on amazon for the new chicken keeper!
- backyardchickens.com is the ultimate website for anyone wanting to start on chickens
