How to cut my hair short and love it
"I am liberated from a mass of hair that I hid behind"
How I did it: I began by playing around with the idea of having short hair. I thought about the pros and the cons. I had cut my hair short before and disliked it, and I was worried that this would happen again. So, I sat on the idea.
Then, I began to pay attention to women around me with shorter hair as well as images I saw online. I browsed for a style and length that would suite me. Once I found a style that I liked, that would work on my hair and my face, I sat on the idea some more.
Eventually, I got to a place where I wanted short hair and I wanted the haircut that I found so much that I knew I wouldn't regret my decision. So, I made the appointment and cut off about six inches of hair. No regrets.
Lessons & tips:
- Research potential haircuts
- Be realistic about how certain haircuts will look on you and work with (or against) your hair.
- Also, be realistic about what hairstyles might change. I used to constantly wear my hair in a ponytail. While I can still put my hair up, it's definitely more work now than it was.
- Be patient. Don't go out on an impulse and cut your hair-- I can guarantee you'll regret it (I've done it!). Sit on it and really make sure that you want it.
- talk to other people about it-- friends, your stylist, etc. and show them what you want to do, they will see things that you can't.
- Go to a stylist for the first cut-- it's important that your haircut looks good! You can go somewhere cheap once you get the shape down and are only looking for trimming.
