How I did it: I'm going to consider this goal as done since now that I have started volunteering, I plan to continue indefinitely.

I had been wanting for quite some time to do volunteer work with animals, perhaps with an animal rescue organization/humane society.  There are several shelters in my area so I selected one and filled out a volunteer form online.  The next day I received a call saying that they needed someone to clean cat cages every other week at a local pet store where the humane society makes cats available for adoption.

After receiving training, I began cleaning cages every other week.  This type of work may not be for everyone, but it allows me to visit with cats that are up for adoption and contribute to their welfare by making sure they are well cared for.  I plan to continue this type of volunteer work indefinitely.

Having two rescue cats as pets influenced me to volunteer in this area.

Lessons & tips: Take into account your talents, interests, and schedule.  Then research to see what opportunities are available in your area.
